In fact, more than 50% of the company employees hope to grow in their job in both horizontal and vertical way.
But why some people who already succeeded and stood in the position of ‘Manager’ would like to go back to their normal employee life. Why?
‘With Great Power comes Great Responsibility.’
That is the famous quote from Spiderman. Yes, when your position steps up you need to be more and show more responsibility not only yourself but for your team and your organization as well.
This month, I would like to share 3 challenging points that new manager or manager who struggling with your position should be aware.
1st Challenge: Prepare for the meteor effect
Persons who get promote, mostly are persons who well-perform. I mean you are doing great more than failure. But your life will change when you step up to the manager. When you fail as a normal employee, your manager will be the main person who comes to you and might help you to fix the issues.
But when you are a manager, at least 3 people will come to you, your senior manager or might be your director or might be your CEO (depend on your company structure), your client and your team. So, prepare to fail and prepare to handle not only your work but people surround you.
Like a meteor, you might use to be a top star, but top star also can fall to the ground.
2nd Challenge: Prepare to be a decision maker
A decision maker might sound powerful. However, in the real situation, your decision made a various effect to various people. Once you decide, you need to prepare to accept the result of your decision.
So, before and after you decide, think and rethink again with 5W1H (What, When, Where, Who, Why and How) for the decision that you made.
Be reminded that you will have the questions from your superior or subordinate all the time with 5W1H. They also expect to hear good reasons not just carelessly answer from you.
3rd Challenge: Prepare to be a true learner
To be a manager, you cannot learn only by the book. I totally agree that reading a book is really significant. Every day updating the news, is essential as you need to know how the world is going and how your competitor and client are thinking as well as how you can innovate and adapt your products to the market.
However, not only learning via those things will be enough. For the manager, another valuable weapon for learning is you need to learn from surrounding people.
To do that you need to be a good observer. Not only observes their behaviors but please think about 5W1H again. 5W1H will help you understand people thought. You will understand all angles of the
situation. The more you understand, the more you can find the gap and possibility.
Nonetheless, to be an open-minded person is also important. You won’t know what will happen to you in every second of your working life, but please be open-minded cause all the things happen for a reason.
