Nowadays, information is everywhere, spreads quickly, and changes fast. Sometimes, the information may include opinions or interpretations, which can influence our perspectives and ability to identify and solve problems effectively and ultimately impact the success of an organization. This makes it important to be careful and to cross-check information received before making any decision.
Toyobo (Thailand) Co., Ltd. is a well-established trading company in the Toyobo group, with over 72 years of history in Thailand. The company is well known as specialized in manufacturing and distributing other products such as engineering plastics, polyester synthetic fibers, plastic films, environmental fibers, functional fibers, and distributor of Hitachi water pumps. The company recognizes the importance of working based on facts and aims to develop employees’ understanding and awareness of this approach.
This year, Toyobo (Thailand) Co., Ltd. continues to trust in us, Asian Identity, to organize the annual workshop on “Factual Basis Problem-Solving Skills”. The objective of this workshop is to enhance understanding and review organizational culture of the “Factual Basis”. In this workshop, we focused on building awareness and creating understanding of fact-based problem solving, which will enhance the effectiveness of root-cause analysis and actionable solution design that align with the organization’s goals, within the scope of individual responsibilities. Moreover, this workshop also provides a great opportunity to review the commitment of Toyobo (Thailand), “Toyobo Spirit”, to ensure that everyone can perform and enhance their working output based on this commitment which lead to the sustainable development of the organization.

In this workshop, participants realized the importance of working based on “facts”, which is the foundation of logical thinking and effective decision-making. They also learned the significance of verifying the information instead of believing it immediately once received it. Because some misleading of interpretation, opinions, and biases can lead to wrong issues and being unable to understand the situation objectively from various perspectives. Participants understood these key points through the experiential learning method where participants could deeply discuss in their groups and exchange ideas within the class during the workshop.

Next, participants practiced working with facts through a case study that we have designed specifically to solve workplace problems. Participants had to identify the root cause of the problem and solve it from the source (Root-Problem Solving), starting with separating between “facts” and “opinions.” This allowed them to analyze the root cause from various relevant perspectives.
After that, each group worked together to design a solution and evaluate it by using the relevant framework. This was to ensure that the selected solution was practical, actionable within their scope of responsibility, and aligned with the team and organization’s goals.

Finally, participants practiced techniques for creating easy-to-understand documents through an activity that involved revising a proposal for a problem-solving plan. The focus was on making the document organized, clear, and easier for decision-making, with a structure that considers the perspective of the reader.
Although the topic was complex and difficult to understand, Asian Identity made an effort to design the workshop in a way that was easy to understand, fun, and beneficial for the participants. Throughout the workshop, everyone made a great effort to learn the content and enjoy the activities prepared by us with a friendly atmosphere. When faced with challenges or difficulties, everyone worked together, asking questions and brainstorming, allowing them to learn collectively throughout the activity.
After the workshop, many participants shared positive feedback, such as:
Feedback from Manager Level
I have learned that clearly separating facts from opinions is essential for making sure that decisions are based on accurate information. This principle should be applied to all types of decision-making, whether in work or daily life.
I realized that the way of thinking when it comes to problem-solving differs quite a bit between Japanese and Thai people. I’ve become more aware of these differences and will apply this awareness to improve future collaboration./blockquote>
The explanation of the Why-Why analysis method made me realize the importance of the process of exploring various possibilities based on facts.
Feedback from Staff Level
I will apply the content of the Factual Basis Presentation and the creation of easy-to-understand documents in the workplace.
I really like the topic of separate facts and opinions. In most cases, the information we receive tends to be a mix of both, so it’s important to understand the facts and the overall context before making any decisions.
I will applying the overall concept of factual basis to daily work management by using fact from daily tasks to report to the supervisor and to analyze and solve problems accurately / to find solutions that are more aligned with the situation.

After the workshop, Asian Identity followed up by collecting feedback and listening to the outcomes. Many participants mentioned that they have talked more about separate facts and opinions in their daily work. This marks a very promising start in applying the principle of a factual basis in practice.
Asian Identity would like to express our sincere gratitude to Toyobo (Thailand) for giving us the opportunity to be a part of strengthening your organizational culture and continuously enhancing your work processes to higher standards year after year. We truly hope to continue supporting your organization’s growth in the future.
